Two days ago, the asylum seekers from Afganistan -who were on hunger strike for the last 27 days against the UNHCR policies that don’t proceed the documents of people from Afganistan – received the horrible news about the death of 25 people from Afganistan trying to cross from Turkey to Greece.
Turkey is still a ‚buffer country‘ for asylum seekers. They have to apply to another country in europe to go as ‚refugee‘. Without this process getting started, they cannot work, cannot get any health service, they dont even have a place to stay and they are mostly forced to beg, do prostution etc. and it is unfortunately very common that they commit suicide or die trying to cross to another country but it is totally ıgnored by the state as well as UNHCR, while they already have no way to be recognized, especially after their death. Since 2012, UNHCR started a systematic suspension period only for the asylum seekers from Afganistan in Turkey.
Since UNHCR is not proceeding the documents of asylum seekers from Afghanistan in Turkey for many years (some has been waiting for more than 19 years and there is an obvious discrimination against people from afganistan in this sense) in march about 300 asylum seekers started to protest UNHCR in front of its Ankara Office and some of them went on hungerstrike. Then police attacked the strike, and they gathered in front of UNHCR office in Ankara again one month ago. This time, 12 out of 110 asylum seekers in protest tents were in hungerstrike for 27 days and some of them stiched their mouths. On 26th of april Police attacked the hungerstrike and protest again. However, the asylum seekers gave a break to their hungerstrike only after learning that 25 people amongst the protesters lost their lives while they were trying to cross to greece from turkey few days ago.This wednesday, on 14th, we gather in Munich, Marienplatz at 13:50 to be in solidarity with the asylum seekers from Afganistan that still wait in from of the UNHCR office in Ankara.

Vor zwei Tagen erhielten afghanische Geflüchtete in der Türkei – die seit mindestens 27 Tagen im Hungerstreik waren, um gegen das Vorgehen der UNHCR zu protestieren die keine Asylgesuche von Afghan*innen bearbeitet – die furchtbare Nachricht, dass mindestens 25 afghanische Geflüchtete beim Versuch von der Türkei nach Griechenland zu gelangen gestorben sind.
Die Türkei ist immer noch ein Transitland für Asylsuchende. Sie müssen sich in einem weiteren europaeischen Land bewerben um Flüchtlingsstatus zu erhalten. Solange sie diesen nicht haben können sie nicht arbeiten und bekommen keine aerztliche Versorgung, sind obdachlos und müssen meist betteln oder sind zu Sexarbeit gezwungen. In der Konsequenz begehen viele Selbstmord oder sterben bei dem Versuch in ein anderes Land zu gelangen. Diese Umstaende werden vom türkischen Staat und der UNHCR totgeschwiegen, waehrend die Geflüchteten keine Möglichkeit haben anerkannt zu werden, vor allem nicht nach ihrem Tod. Seit 2012 bearbeitet die UNHCR systematisch keine Antraege von afghanischen Asylsuchenden in der Türkei.
Da die UNHCR seit vielen Jahren kaum Antraege von afghanischen Geflüchteten bearbeitet organisierten im Maerz etwa 300 Geflüchtete Proteste vor dem Büro der UNHCR in Ankara und einige von ihnen gingen in Hungerstreik. Manche warten seit 19 Jahren und Afghan*innen werden diesbezüglich offensichtlich diskriminiert. Die Polizei hat die Proteste daraufhin angegriffen und aufgelöst. Vor einem Monat versammelten sie sich erneut vor dem Büro der UNHCR. Dieses Mal waren zwölf der 110 Geflüchteten 27 Tage lang im Hungerstreik, einige von ihnen naehten ihre Münder zu. Am 26. April griff die Polizei sie erneut an. Allerdings brachen die Geflüchteten ihren Hungerstreik erst ab, als sie erfuhren dass 25 der Protestierenden auf ihrem Weg von der Türkei nach Griechenland vor wenigen Tagen gestorben waren.
Wir treffen uns deswegen diesen Mıttwoch, den 14. Mai 2014 um 13.50 Uhr am Marienplatz um uns solidarisch mit den Geflüchteten zu zeigen, die immer noch vor dem Büro der UNHCR in Ankara warten.
