Film screening „Insumisas – Women in the Struggle in Western Sahara“ and subsequent input from Najla Mohamed-Lamin

The Sahrawis‘ struggle for freedom and self-determination against the Moroccan occupation, which violates international law, has now been going on for five decades. Politically, diplomatically and militarily, they are resisting Moroccan settler colonialism, the exploitation of their country’s natural resources and the oppression of Saharawi civil society. At the same time, the occupation is deeply intertwined with European economic interests. German companies such as Siemens Energy or Heidelberg Materials profit from the exploitation of the diverse natural resources. Just last October, the European Court of Justice confirmed that the trade and fishing agreements between the EU and Morocco were unlawfully extended to Western Sahara without the consent of the Sahrawi people. It thus reaffirmed important principles of international law, which is currently under attack from many sides.

A special focus of the event will be on the feminist resistance against the occupation, in which Sahrawi women play a central role. They shape and implement the collective visions of their society and have fought for freedom in an unparalleled way.

With: Najla Mohamed-Lamin. She was born in the Sahrawi refugee camps and is an internationally renowned activist for the rights of her people. In 2023, the BBC named her one of the 100 most important women.

At the beginning of the event, the 26-minute film “Insumisas – Women in the Struggle in Western Sahara” will be shown, which highlights the leading role of Sahrawi women.

A joint event of the Decolonial Practices Group, München International and the marxistischen linken.
